Quite a few have asked, "What if we missed the deadline for the 1999 qualifier? Can we enter in 2000?"
ANSWER: Your qualifying score is the composite of your 1998, 1999, AND 2000 qualifying efforts. A team could amass all of its points in 2000 and some teams will no doubt do that who didn't enter in 1998 or 99, but enter for the first time in 2000. Qualification for the Millennial Event in AD 2000 is based on a team's aggregate point score in the qualifiers. Clearly, having three chances to amass points is better than just one, but if your team is good, there is no reason why it could not qualify during 2000 alone.
To be fair to all of the teams that entered in 1998 or 1999 however, a team entering for the first time in 2000 will still be liable for the application fee. They will also miss out on any "easy points" that they may have gained in 1998 or 1999 (such as certain static judging points).
During the various qualifiers, all entries must amass at least 2000 points in order to progress toward finalist status and admission into the Millennial event in AD 2000 (The exact number "2000" my be curved by the judges, depending on the final scoring spread).
Be advised that a number of teams have expressed an intent to compete and qualify in 2000. They have decided to wait until 2000 because they either did not receive word about the competition in time to organize their team by the deadline for application submission, or they did not feel that they could be ready to fly by June 1999.
The bottom line is that if you wish to field a team for 2000, you should start immediately to organize your team, obtain finanacial backing to build your entry and to travel, and most importantly, BEGIN WORK NOW! Don't wait until the 2000 application deadline to begin.
